Fostering dogs, cats, kittens, and puppies! Our non profit association APAMA (Asociación protectora de animales y medio ambiente) helps to protect animals, rescue animals, spay, neuter, pet adoption and also pet fostering.
About APAMA
APAMA was founded in March 2015 by a group of volunteers who wanted to improve the conditions of cats living on the street and find loving homes for all the abandoned animals in Almuñécar. Over the following years, many cats and dogs have been rescued here and even in nearby towns, and forever homes have been found for them. Apama receives no government help and is an official animal charity. We rely entirely on donations and the occasional charity events that are set up throughout the year.
Apart from the rescues and adoptions, Apama is involved in educating our society on the importance of spaying/neutering and has been working closely with the town hall on TNR (Trap, Neuter, and Return) projects, which are fundamental to stop the number of unwanted births that occur throughout the year. However, the main problem that we face is where to put animals that have been rescued. We don’t have a physical shelter so we rely 100% on foster homes. More often than not, we have to turn down new cases as we have nowhere to house the animal, with our volunteers having up to 20 kittens in their homes. So we always welcome new temporary foster families.
How can I become a cat or dog foster family?
The first step is to get in touch with us via our Instagram account @apama_almunecar, our Facebook account Apama Almuñécar One of our volunteers will then get in touch and will send you a foster form questionnaire, available in English, for you to fill in so as we can assess what cat or dog would be most suitable for your circumstances. You can even request to foster puppies and kittens. In some cases you may want to foster a family of kittens or puppies, so let us know your wishes. Then we will arrange for your new foster pet to go to your home, more often than not meeting at our vet. A pet fostering contract will be signed which states information such as the name of the pet and any equipment we give you (i.e litter box, collar, lead etc). In the temporary fostering contract, you promise to look after your new furry guest and offer them lots of love and care until a new permanent home is found for them.
How long does fostering dogs or cats last?
We usually ask that you temporarily foster the dogs or cats until they are adopted. Sometimes that is just a few days and other times it can be weeks or months. However, on the contract, you can state how long you want to foster a pet. In addition, your fostering contract can be terminated at any time, providing we receive ample warning/notice, so we have time to find a new foster home. Normally a couple of weeks is enough.
What do I have to do?
Just look after your temporary guest (dog, puppy, cat, or kitten) and get them prepared to love people be ready for their forever home. Some of the cats and dogs are extremely timid, due to the bad experiences they’ve had whilst living on the streets. This means they may require a little extra patience with lots of love, in order to lose that fear. This is one of the fundamental roles of a pet foster family. We also require you to take lots of cute photos and videos so we can post them and so we can help get them adopted.
May I adopt a dog or cat?
Of course, you can! There are times when you are fostering a dog or a cat and you fall in love with them. Providing they have not already been adopted, you may contact us and express your interest. You may also look on our social media pages to see if there are any cats or dogs you would like to adopt as well.
What about veterinary costs or maintenance costs?
We will provide you with EVERYTHING you need (i.e litter boxes, collars, leads, food and drink bowls, even food and cat litter if needed). All the veterinary care that the animal may need is covered by us. Depending on the age of the cat/dog, we will vaccinate them and even spay and neuter them in order to have them protected and ready to be adopted.
